Asset History

We visited Keeneland in early November 2008, who were selling 5,000 mares, fillies and foals, or weanlings as they call them over there, over a two week period. Having been to the Select Sale at nearby Fasig Tipton on the Sunday, which showed little sign of the global turndown, with one mare selling for a world record $16 million, we were nervous about our prospects of buying a filly or broodmare to fit our investment criteria.

Our shortlist was very short, and amounted to one! This was the four year old mare, Dress Uniform. She is a lovely individual, correct, a good size and very attractive, particularly given her sire, Red Ransom, whose offspring are often not that pleasing on the eye. As a racehorse, she was not a world beater but she was a winner, and was placed three times. She does, however, have an exceptional pedigree, being a full sister to both the 2003 Oaks winner Casual Look, and the Listed winner and Group One placed Shabby Chic, herself the dam of the Italian Oaks winner, Fashion Statement. Her mother, Style Setter, won three races, and the second dam, Charleston Rag, was a Grade One winner, and the pedigree goes back to fine performers such as Meadow Court.

Her 2007 full brother was called Mubtassim. Trained by Freddy Head, he was an unruly but capable two year old and his seasonal debut in 2010 confirmed him as a potential Classic winner. Sadly, he broke his leg in his final gallop before his Derby trial and was destroyed.

In short, she is a lovely individual from an outstanding family. We were delighted to secure her for US$550,000.

Dress Uniform's first foal was a colt by New Approach, and she foaled a filly to Dalakhani in February 2011. She is now in foal to Invincible Spirit, and is believed to be carrying a filly.

Her bay colt yearling by New Approach was much admired at the Tattersalls Book One sales, and attracted vets representing six leading purchasers. There was plenty of activity in the ring too, with George Bolton, the owner of Curlin, and Jeremy Noseda bidding, but the final nod went to John Ferguson, who paid 190,000 guineas for this strong rangey colt. October 2011

Dress Uniform realised 360,000 guineas at the December Mare Sales at Tattersalls, selling to Mount Brilliant Farm in the US. November 2011
